THE PATHS OF THE ŠAVRINKE

WHY TRIESTE?

“Trieste ate everything!”

By the late 19th and during the first half of the 20th century, Trieste was the most important economic centre of the northern Adriatic and the principal market for produce from the Istrian hinterland. The Šavrinkas sold eggs, milk, cheese, poultry, fruit and vegetables there, and on their return to the villages they brought salt, kerosene, soap, cloth, cookware and other necessities that were not available in rural households. In this way, they became an important link between village and city.
